The Government of Papua New Guinea has taken a significant step towards modernizing its digital infrastructure with the establishment of the Government Cloud Platform, as mandated under the Digital Government Act 2022, PART III, Digital Infrastructure. This platform comprises two critical components, as outlined in Sections 25 and 26 of the Act, namely Government Leased Cloud Infrastructure and Government Private Cloud Infrastructure. These initiatives are reinforced by the Cloud Policy, the Digital Government Plan, and the Medium-Term Development Plan 4, emphasizing a “Cloud First” approach that seeks to harness the latest emerging technologies while addressing legacy and outdated hardware and software deployments within the Government ICT sectors.

The Government Cloud Platform holds several key advantages for Papua New Guinea. Firstly, it offers a means to significantly reduce government ICT investment costs, allowing for more efficient allocation of resources. Secondly, the platform enhances the government’s capacity to improve service delivery to its citizens. This advancement is pivotal in achieving the goals set forth in the Digital Government Act, aiming for a more digitally connected, efficient, and responsive government that serves the diverse needs of its population. Government departments and agencies, as defined in the Digital Government Act 2022, are encouraged to explore the Government Cloud Platform for hosting applications tailored for government operations, citizen engagement, and business-related services.

Currently, the Government Cloud Platform provides a range of services that include; Domain Name Hosting, Email Hosting and Application Hosting.

These services represent the initial steps in leveraging cloud technology to transform the government’s digital capabilities. Agencies and departments interested in transitioning to this innovative platform are encouraged to reach out to the onboarding team for guidance and support, ensuring a smooth and efficient migration process. The Government of Papua New Guinea’s commitment to digital transformation and cloud adoption underscores its dedication to enhancing government operations and citizen services in a rapidly evolving digital age.
